What Does “Bred with H.E.A.R.T.” Mean?

The American Kennel Club’s Bred with H.E.A.R.T. Program recognizes breeders who make an ongoing commitment to responsible breeding practices, health testing, education, and the well-being of their dogs. H.E.A.R.T. stands for:

H — Health
Breeders commit to appropriate health screening of their breeding dogs based on recommendations for their breed.

E — Education
Breeders commit to continuing education and staying current with responsible breeding practices and canine health.

A — Accountability
Breeders agree to follow the AKC’s Care and Conditions Policy and meet program requirements.

R — Responsibility
Breeders accept responsibility for the health and well-being of the puppies they produce and agree to comply with applicable laws and regulations.

T — Tradition
Breeders uphold the AKC tradition of breeding purebred dogs that are healthy, happy, and true to their breed.

The program requires participating breeders to meet specific qualifications, including maintaining good standing with the AKC, performing applicable health screening, agreeing to AKC policies and requirements, and completing continuing breeder education.
